Pavilion House

This circa 1888 grand Victorian family residence was meticulously restored and a new contemporary pavilion wing added to fully embrace the expansive garden.

A pared-back contemporary pavilion is carefully detailed so it only just touches the site’s original heritage building, allowing each structure to define its own presence.

Seeking to create a sense of continuity and connection between period details and contemporary spaces, we blurred the line between inside and out, old and new, and in doing so created a dynamic dialogue between them.

Designing a large and welcoming home connected to the surrounding environment, focused on creating the perfect backdrop for a modern family who love entertaining family and friends. The original building featured grand marble fireplaces, ornate Victorian cornices, arches and soaring ceilings. We focused on ways to compliment and enhance their beauty while updating and incorporating home automation technology. Upholding the significance of period details and adopting a classical and elegant approach to new finishes and fittings, we wove in rose gold, herringbone tiling, and Ashlar patterned limestone walls in tune with the home’s original features.

Working with a large site, we embraced the scale of the property by pushing the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living. The new pavilion is lightly placed, connected to the existing heritage fabric via a courtyard that brings light, the lushness of garden views and natural air flow inside. Seeking to create a sense of continuity and connection between these period details and the newer, contemporary spaces, we blurred the line between inside and out, old and new, and in doing so created a dynamic dialogue between them.
