Albert Park

Located on a leafy street in the beachside suburb of Albert Park, Melbourne, the site came with an 1880s weatherboard cottage and accompanying stables to the rear, now joined by a new architectural insertion that creates a generous and contemporary home.

The marble staircase defines this contemporary interior, slicing through the levels to let in light and marking the line between old and new.

A former weatherboard cottage and red-brick dairy stables with Melbourne Grand Prix roots, this project required significant intervention to create cohesive spaces that reveal a contemporary rhythm.

The challenge with Albert Park was to create a cohesive, generously scaled home that would connect three distinct forms and styles: the 1880s cottage and brick stables with the new architectural addition. Our aim was to create a new contemporary chapter for this former dairy, while embracing the internal form of the gabled roof. The house required significant interior alterations to open it up and create a functional layout. Many of the heritage features were retained externally, while internally it has been completely transformed using timeless, hardwearing materials and finishes.

Paring materials back to their sculptural essence creates rhythm. Designing the stair, we looked at ways to make it as light and minimal as possible, but we also wanted another level of texture and detail that felt connected to the history of the building. We thought about the site’s link to the Melbourne Grand Prix, and the feeling of leather gloves and steering wheels with all their handsome stitching. We searched for a master leatherworker and were lucky enough to find one in Melbourne who could pull off the challenging brief. Stitched on site, the soft leather responds beautifully and will patina over time.

The intention for Albert Park was to create a pared back, low maintenance, restorative sanctuary. The combination of natural stone floors, pale timber cabinetry and white walls, serve as the ideal backdrop for showcasing an abundance of artwork, sculptural pieces and iconic furniture. While the colour palette is neutral and restrained, allowing the internal and external spaces to flow seamlessly into one another. This balance between privacy for the inhabitants and onnection to the outside world has created a very unique way to live.
